’89 domande a Bambounou – DJ

Michel Foucault described heterotopias as “other spaces”, governed by different rules and temporalities. Do you see the club as a heterotopic space detached from everyday life, with its own social codes and intensity? Yes, but not in a mystical way, I don’t necessarily think that The club is another world, It’s more like a compressed version of this one, just louder and with better lighting XD What makes it heterotopic to me is time because In a club time stretches and folds. You know like Five minutes can feel eternal. Six hours can go by very quick, that intensity doesn’t exist in daily life.

Where are you from? I’m from Paris baby.

How did you start dj’ing? And How has your relationship with DJing evolved over the years? I kind of started by mistake, I as more interested by the production side of music and I ended up DJing and I absolutely loved it!!

Do you think the underground electronic scene still exists and if so what does it mean to you today? It does exist but I think it’s more of an attitude rather than a place, the only thing that I’m always asking myself is: are we chasing relevance or the truth? And that I don’t know 🙂

Who are the people who have inspired you the most? Patient Djs, all of them.

How do you prepare for a set? Pretty basic, I dig for a week, I end up liking maybe 5 to 10 tracks that I know I’m going to play and I visualize it and then I’m ready.

Do you imagine your sets as storytelling or are they more instinctive and shaped in the moment? Completely instinctive, I’m not at all in the storytelling rhetoric I find it a bit lame to be honest, not me.

What makes a club “iconic” for you? And which ones are your favourite to play at? When people are free to lose their minds and be themselves and that balance is rare.

Can you describe your ideal night? First part: confusion. Second part: a bit of danger. Third part: Tenderness.

Venice doesn’t follow the usual rules of nightlife or clubbing and is not exactly the first city people associate with club culture. As a DJ, how does playing in a context like this shift your mindset, and does the city’s atmosphere change the way you think about sound, space, or the role of music itself? Venice feels and ultimately IS surreal, you don’t need to force things and you can let silence speak a bit more.

If Golden Goose was a sound or a song, what would it be? A lush, shimmering reverb of ambient sounds.

How do you see fashion influencing music and vice versa? Both valid art forms, both about wearing a costume and putting yourself out there.

If you could dive into the Golden Goose archive, what would be your ultimate go-to piece? The Golden Goose running dad-star (also I absolutely love the name).

What does “authentic” mean in today’s club culture? Do you think it can still be called a subculture or has it become something more of an aesthetic? Authentic means what feels right to yourself, with this in mind it can 100% still be Called a subculture, there are so many layers about club culture, electronic music and everything around that just the looks.

Best advice you have ever received and from whom? Don’t overthink it.

Dreams for the future? Bit cheesy but I deeply want my close ones to be happy.

What’s your best talent? Listening ahah, to Music but, also to people.

If you could have a super power what would you choose? I’d actually love to expand my hearing range and maybe extend my vision too, but I mean… flying like Superman wouldn’t hurt either.

If you could choose which historical era to live in, which would you choose? That’s a complicated one. There are so many periods I’m curious about. Lately I’ve been weirdly obsessed with the pre-Cambrian era, I would have loved to see that but probably not very good music though.

What is the thing you like most about Italy? And one you don’t like? I love everything about Italy 🙂

Favorite books? Three Body Problem by Liu Cixin.

A question you wish we had asked you but didn’t? And what answer would you have given yourself? What’s my Superpower, ah wait, you did!!!!

If you could choose a person you know to read this interview, who would it be? My wife, I hope she reads it.
